A Cotswold Cottage Owner’s Visit to Clarkson’s The Farmer’s Dog Pub
As a holiday cottage owner in the beautiful village of Broadway, I’m always on the lookout for great local spots to recommend to my guests. Many have already visited Jeremy Clarkson's Diddly Squat Farm Shop and are now interested to visit Clarkson's new pub, The Farmer's Dog. following the very successful Clarkson's Farm series on Amazon along with Kaleb Cooper, Lisa Hogan, Charlie Ireland and of course Gerald Cooper
Having heard such positive reviews and seen the Amazon series 'Clarkson's Farm', I was excited to discover what The Farmer's Dog pub had to offer in supporting British farms by exclusively selling locally produced goods.
Billed as a whole day out, The Farmer's Dog has a restaurant, one-stop butcher (Hops & Chops), bottle shop and bar. It also has The Farmer's Puppy: Bar & Kitchen, their small but mighty version of the pub in a tent!

So, on a Sunday lunchtime in January, I decided to take a little trip over to Asthall Barrow, Near Burford OX18 4HJ, to visit The Farmer’s Dog pub. Nestled in the Oxfordshire countryside.
The country pub is exactly what you’d expect from Jeremy Clarkson—rustic, no-nonsense, and packed with character. The interior is warm and welcoming, with roaring fires and wooden beams, while the outdoor area offers stunning views of the surrounding farmland and English countryside.

Arriving just after 11.15am the car park offered plenty of parking space; however it was already filling up. The friendly car park attendants were expertly guiding arriving vehicles into the remaining spaces. It is very advisable to book in advance, which you can do via the website, although they do keep a few tables available for walk-ins.
Fantastic Food
On Sundays, the pub offers a lunchtime buffet, and there is also a selection of starters and tasty puddings. During the weekdays, there are seasonal changing menus with a great selection of starters, main courses and puddings. Menu favourites include the steak pie with a Hawkstone Gravy and also Cotswold Lamb & Mint Sausage.
The menu champions hearty food made with local, farm-to-table ingredients from British farms, including produce from Diddly Squat Farm Shop itself. They have a very comprehensive drinks menu and all are British produced, including Hawkstone Lager, Hawkstone Cider and Hawkstone Black (stout). The stout absolutely hit the spot, and they also have a very low alcohol Hawkstone Spa (0.03%).
At the time of our first visit, during the winter months, we were offered a Mulled Cider, which was nice and warming, especially with the wood burner keeping us cosy. On our return visit a couple of months later, we found that the beer garden and outdoor space were a great addition especially in surprisingly sunny spring weather!

Although on our visits there was no sign of Jeremy Clarkson or the now equally famous Kaleb Cooper, the atmosphere was lively, filled with a mix of locals, visitors, and die-hard Jeremy Clarkson fans.
The staff were very friendly, and it's clear the pub is already becoming a popular stop for those exploring the Cotswolds. On Mondays, they are encouraging the locals and farmers to come in and socialise and enjoy a drink together - a wonderful idea !
Another great idea was that they were showing the Six Nations Rugby tournament at the outside bar called The Farmer’s Puppy. It was a wonderful atmosphere with the Live Rugby matches on screen and the bar selling all Hawstone’s Beers and Ciders.
All items that are sold at Didley Squat are also here so you can purchase any mementos, as well as the Hops & Chops butchers shop where you have a splendid choice of British reared meats, pies and sausage rolls.
For clients who love good locally produced food, a relaxed countryside setting, and a little bit of TV-famous charm, The Farmer’s Dog andDiddly Squat Farm Shop make for a fantastic day out. Just be sure to arrive early at the farm shop—parking fills up fast, and those infamous milk and honey products don’t stay on the shelves for long!
Another tip is if you are planning to visit both places on the same day…. stick to the main roads, it is quicker as the single track roads are very narrow...
Back in Broadway, I can’t help but feel lucky to have such great destinations nearby, from historic villages to quirky celebrity-owned spots. If you’re staying in one of our cottages:
